Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, or PCIT, is an evidence-based approach designed for young children and their caregivers. It is appropriate for children ages 2 to 7 who struggle with emotional regulation, anxiety, impulsivity, or ongoing behavioral challenges.

PCIT focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship while helping caregivers feel more confident, calm, and effective in their responses. Rather than relying on generic parenting advice, this work happens in real time with your child, so skills are practiced where they matter most.

Who PCIT Is a Good Fit For

PCIT can be helpful if your young child:

  • Has frequent tantrums or emotional outbursts

  • Struggles with listening or following directions

  • Becomes easily overwhelmed or anxious

  • Has ADHD or difficulties with impulse control

  • Has intense emotional reactions that feel hard to manage

  • Is experiencing power struggles or escalating conflicts at home

PCIT is particularly effective for children with ADHD and anxiety, as it supports both emotional regulation and consistent, predictable parenting responses.

How PCIT Works

Online PCIT is conducted via telehealth and involves both teaching and live coaching.

You will begin with sessions focused on learning specific skills that support connection, emotional safety, and effective limits. During this phase, I will also help you set up your space at home so you feel comfortable and prepared for coaching sessions. This includes guidance on toys, room setup, and technology, so everything feels manageable and clear.

Once you have learned the skills, we move into live coaching sessions. During these sessions, you will play with your child while wearing earbuds, allowing me to coach you in real time. I guide you throughout the session, helping you notice what is working, adjust your responses, and build confidence as you practice.

Because this happens during real interactions with your child, the skills tend to feel more natural and translate to use outside of sessions as well.

A Flexible, Family-Centered Approach

PCIT is not one-size-fits-all. Some families benefit from more coaching time, while others move through the process more quickly. We tailor the pace and focus based on your child’s needs, your goals, and what feels sustainable for your family.

PCIT can be done with one parent, though it encouraged for all parents or caregivers participate when possible. When caregivers are aligned and supported, children experience more consistency and predictability, which helps changes last.

Why PCIT Helps Young Children

Young children learn best through relationships. PCIT helps by:

  • Strengthening the parent-child bond

  • Supporting emotional regulation for both child and parent

  • Reducing reactivity and power struggles

  • Increasing positive behaviors through connection and praise

  • Helping parents feel calmer, more confident, and more capable

As parents become more regulated and intentional in their responses, children often show improvements in behavior, emotional expression, and overall sense of safety.

Family Walking

Parenting a young child with intense emotions can feel overwhelming. PCIT offers a structured and supportive way to build confidence, reduce stress, and create more peaceful moments together. By focusing on connection first and supporting parents in becoming more regulated and intentional in their responses, children often show meaningful changes in behavior and emotional regulation. This approach is especially helpful for young children with ADHD, anxiety, or frequent emotional outbursts.
